Final Toille

Here is the overall outcome of my skeletal inspired Toille. I am really quite pleased with it now that it is finished . I want to also do a photoshoot with someone wearing it to see how it looks on a body. Back view clearly showing spine and rib cage detail. If I were to change anything about this toille I would maybe consider extending the length of the top so that it would look more like a shirt/dress.

Close up of the gathering used to represent the spine and rib cage inspiration. I used the sheer fabric for the gathering to create a contrast against the calico, which in my opinion I think it works really well.

Sweet heart neckline in the calico fabric then sheer at the top to contrast. The curves on the rib area works really well rather than been straight. This was rather time consuming as I had to accurately measure both sides in order to get it as symmetrical as possible.

All i need to attatch now is the buttons, which i already have so this shouldnt cause me much trouble. I really want to see what it would be like in other fabric rather than calico. I am quite determined to make it once i finish for the summer.

Skeletal portfolio page

To move on from my initial skeletal research I have now created my own moodboard to gain inspiration for design, so I now have about 6 skeletal inspired pages to design from which is good because hopefully I will now be able to design lots of nice interesting garments, whilst at the same time having lots of inspirational images in front of me.

elsa- skeleton dress

Even GaGa wears skeletal inspired clothing, this isnt much of a shock compared to some of the outrageous pieces she has worn most recently.

To gain more inspiration for my toille, and to create more innovative design ideas I looked at Elsa Schiaparelli and used these images to create some samples i then stuffed them to recreate something similar to these images.

Rib Cage

This case is amazing! ribcage suitcase!

The skeletal system is now my main source of inspiration for my research practices. I have been able to create a variety of designs that represents the ribcage through sheer fabric and diferent decoration techniques such as gathering, ruffles and rouching. I just hope it will look as good as i have in mind, we shall soon be able to tell.

Sarah Burton Makes Royal Fashion History!

Well yesterday most definately made fashion History as the world saw Kate Middleton marry Prince William in the most stunning dress by Sarah Burton for Alexander Mcqueen. Catherine looked so graceful and elegant, the dress was perfect for her! Simplicity at its best.

Such a gorgeous train, not too long like what Princess Dianas. I still cant get over how classy this dress is!

the hand embroidered and appliqued lace was absolutely stunning and the techniques and skills put into this dress is just extraordinary. The dress featured a victorian style corset that nipped in at the waist then out again with padded hips.

Kates make up was also very elegant and done to perfection, apparantly she did it all herself. Great natural make up skills Kate!

Rodarte- Skeletal

These images have given me inspiration for my toille that i will be designing and making within the next couple of weeks. My ideas have started to move away from pleats which is suprising as i have sampled quite a bit with them.

Presentation of ranges and illustrations

Yesterday our group had to present all our ranges and illustrations and sell it to our tutor and other peers. Overall the presentation went well and we were really pleased how all our ranges worked together, which shows how well we worked as a team.

Enterprise

Pop up shop that we will be participating in on 22nd march

Hand embellished socks with lace sequins and bows

Our enterprise module has been running throughout the course of the year, the work required for it is to set up our own £10 Business. The £10 must cover all costs such as printing advertising, cost of materials etc... we could also choose if we wanted to work as a sole trader or partnership. So I decided that it would be a good idea to work as a patnership as I work well in a team, so me and my friend Gemma set up our own little business hand embellishing socks. Our inspiration came from miu miu and vivienne westwood, but unfortunately we were unable to create anything like those designs due to the costs of woolen socks so here is an image of the style we produced.

Brand Board

Here is my board that helps define the brand miu miu. I am going to use this as a source of inspiration. This board is separate to the group one we created as I wanted to create a board that would clearly define the brand using bright colours, which works well So i might consider putting this into my portfolio which will feature some developed design work.

Issey Miyake

Somehow I always find myself looking at pleats as inspiration. I find them so interesting and they can create such innovtative pieces like these Issey Miyake ones.

Gareth and Pleats!

This skirt shape is interesting, and of course the pleats adds to the interest of this garment. Lots of fullness to the skirt

I love this picture it just shows what detail pleats can create, I also like the structure of his garments.

Design realisation- Final Jacket

Here is my final outcome for my Design Realisation project, I must say I have worked really hard on this, I know the pattern is pretty basic but I wanted to perfect my skills in making a jacket, so that it could benefit me in third year. I struggled slightly during our tailoring brief which is why I chose to challenge myself into making a full tailored jacket. I hope this jacket suits my intended market level which was for zara! I think it does. If I had longer I would probably think about doing a more professional photo shoot.

Review of Heroes and Heroines Exhibition- Leeds City Museum.

The heroes and heroines exhibition was an exciting and rewarding experience for any fashion student or person interested in clothing and fillm, as it showcased some of the most highly recognised costumes featured in recent film and television, Most famous being Orlando Bloom’s Pirates of the Caribbean costume, Madonnas silk gown from Evita and Keira Knightley’s Dress from the period drama The Duchess.

The Exhibition also showcased numerous other costumes such as the shirt worn by Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice, Daniel Craigs Costume from Defiance and Cate Blanchett’s extraordinary dress from Elizabeth.

The exhibition created a great opportunity to focus on the intricate detail of the garments, as well as looking at a wide range of fabrics and construction methods. It was particularly interesting to see how the clothing had been adapted in order to match the time period of the film or television programme, as they were created in the twenty-first century (Film/ Television) but reflected a time period that occurred many years prior to this.

Having such open and exclusive access to garments worn by some of the world’s most famous film stars became an attraction and somewhat a fascination, whilst at the same time adapting knowledge and understanding of the type dress worn in different eras. The museum displayed original historic pieces to communicate the high level of accuracy (of film/ television pieces) when comparing garments intended for the screen and garments that are in fact historical.

The 18th century focussed film the duchess was the height of the Georgian period, as well as a period that was important for fashion, social and political status, which is evident to see when looking at the dress worn by Keira Knightley, Bustle and pannier style skirts were very popular during this time, with the bustle being more popular towards the end of the 1700’s

Daniel Craigs World War two focussed film defiance costume depicts a military inspired code of dress, which signifies the event the film is based around, which is about a group of Polish Jews and their fight against German occupied eastern Europe. The look of a worn leather was an created by a textiles artist which ages the look of leather, making it fit to the film. The use of khaki pants and boots accompany the jacket which completes the world war two based outfit.

Cate Blanchett’s film costume for Elizabeth, reflects costume of the mid 1500’s , her dress is very extravagant as her role within the film is being the character of Queen Elizabeth the first during her early reign. From looking at the dress at the exhibition it is clear to see how an abundance of layering has been incorporated into it in order to reflect that of the 1500’s where dresses and womens clothing was very voluminous. The use of contrasting colours was also recognised throughout this time.

Overall this exhibition ultimately gave you an insight to the history of fashion, and how it is now cleverly interpreted and accurately reproduced for modern film and television.
